when did baseball bats first get rated with the “-” plus the number?

I have an easton aluminum bat but I think it is from 1990-1995 and it doesn’t have the “stamp” of -3 but when I looked at the easton web site at similar bats in size, weight, and barrel diameter they were rated at a -3.

It started after kids were getting killed with these cheater rocket lauchers they call bats. I think it started about 8-10 years ago with the BESR (Ball Exit Speed Rating) rating requirement. All high school & up bats can’t be any lighter than -3 & that info & the BESR certification has to be stamped on the bat so the Umps can tell if your bat is legal quickly.

BESR bats also can’t be bigger than 2 5/8 diameter. I believe the max exit speed of a ball hit off the bat on their testing machine can’t be over 100 mph.

This is what confuses me when bat companys tout their superior “pop”…they all can’t go over the max pop allowed….seems like just another way rip kids out of the $400 or so they now charge for these things.
