parents make life tough ?

i’m not being rebellious…i’m just being a regular 19-year-old…you see, all my life, my parents had this sort of bar set up for me…they have HIGH expectations…all A’s in school…lots of clubs and activities…lots of chores as a kid..be the perfect kid…i couldn’t really have friends or boyfriends because they thought it’d be too distracting…so i was pretty much kept in my room to study and read. i’ve been dating my bf for about 9 months now. and he’s REALLY shown me the world i go out more often. we go see museums, parks, used bookstores, plays, theater productions, etc. it’s not like i go party and drinking every night. tonight, we went to see a baseball game and we went to the fair. i came home and my dad was not happy. my parents think i’m being rebellious. i think i’m just having fun and enjoying life. they don’t understand and they think it has something to do with my boyfriend. i’m moving out next year b/c im not working. how do i deal with it now while im here?

You are approaching adulthood and it can be very threatening to parents who have previously had a tight rein on you. Talking things out with them is good–if they are willing. Also, make sure that you spend plenty of time with them as well as time with your boyfriend because parents can see new influences on you as a threat to them and their stability. This is a good time to move out. Show them that they raised a smart, independent wonderful woman, and use your head to make many decisions on your own. It will be bumpy–parents don’t like to let go… but I heard a good quote the other day. The most important job of a parent is to raise and let go of someone who will become a parent to someone else someday.
Go easy on your parents. Don’t lose faith in yourself. You can grow away from them–just let them down gently.
