Baseball Fields In Chicago

Cubs Fans. What are your thoughts on this article concerning the rights of the name Wrigley Field being sold?
Zell won’t hesitate to sell Wrigley Field naming rights.
CHICAGO (AP)—The chief executive officer of the Tribune Company says he won’t hesitate to sell the naming rights to Wrigley Field—even if baseball purists don’t like the idea.
During an interview on CNBC, Sam Zell says despite Wrigley Field being known worldwide, he didn’t get a discount because he wasn’t going to use the naming rights that the field represents.
Zell said he plans to sell the Cubs and Wrigley separately and in his own time frame. He also disclosed that Major League Baseball has approved “four or six” potential ownership groups and that any one of them would be fine.
The sale of the team has been delayed by Zell’s plan to sell the team and the stadium separately, and to have a state agency acquire and renovate Wrigley.
I’ve made my thoughts very clear that I think Sam Zell could quite possibly be the devil and I can’t wait until my precious Cubbies are out of his hands (or cloven hooves) BUT unfortunately this is his right and someone like him only sees dollar signs (he’s a partial owner in the White Sox too so it’s not as though he’s a Cubbie loyalist).
I don’t know if they can afford it (I sure buy a lot of gum) but the Wrigley Company should just buy the naming rights because they do get a lot of free publicity for it and they could keep the name sacred.
I understand that his point but jeez, how much money does a person need? Maybe if he’d donate all the proceeds of the naming rights sale to the Cubs Care charity I’d cut him a little slack.
*I’m trying to not to freak about it yet as it hasn’t happened and maybe never will. The backlash he will receive will be huge, I’m flashing back to the Macy’s/Marshall Fields saga.
