Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith lied to me?
When I was younger I was in a baseball camp. One day they got Ozzie Smith to come. It was awesome. He did some instruction and even autographed my glove. But at one point Ozzie Smith said he could catch fly balls with his eyes closed because he could tell where they were based on the sound of the ball hitting the bat. So he jogged into the shallow outfield and one of the coaches hit him fly balls and he caught them. As a kid I was amazed. But now that I’m older I’m beginning to think this is impossible and he must have been squinting his eyes and able to see. I think Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith lied right to my face. What do you think?
The game of baseball is dangerous enough with eyes open much less closed. I’m sure he was making it up for the sake of the kids at camp. I’m also sure that he had no intention of deceiving anyone but rather performed the stunt as a vehicle of entertainment. I wouldn’t be too hard on the guy. One thing we all know and that is he did some incredible things on the playing field.
If you’ve been around the game of baseball for any great length of time it IS possible to determine where a ball is going based on the sound of the bat. It may not be to the extent that Ozzie hears it but we’ve all been subjected to it. I wouldn’t be overly concerned.
