Is Jackie Robinson the most overrated baseball player of all time?

Jackie Robinson was a product of the Brooklyn Dodger PR machine and the Truman White House. I read a study once where Jackie’s “official statistics” were compared with the actual box scores published in the paper. The study proved that his lifetime batting average was actually 23 points lower! In 1949 when he allegedly won the batting title with an average of .342 he really hit .295. Why aren’t more people aware of these outlandish lies?

That study could be interesting — citation?

Because baseball stat geeks are interested in accurate records of history (hoo boy, are they), and have essentially no political bias when it comes to the statistics.

And Robinson is one of the most thoroughly scrutinized players in history. Were these allegations reliable, they likely would have come to light by now.

No, Robinson is not the most overrated baseball player of all time.

It does look like there are some outlandish lies sloping about, however.
