How can I keep my 4 year old from hitting others?
My son, who is usually a sweet and well behaved boy, has recently been having a problem with hitting others. He only does this when he gets together with all of the neighbor kids, who he’s friends with. A couple of the other kids have a problem with this too. I am friends with the other moms and we are all so frustrated!!! We have talked to them, given time outs, taken things away, grounded them, etc. Currently I am using a chart system. When my son behaves, he gets a smiley face but when he misbehaves he gets a sad face. If he gets 3 sad faces in a day, he loses his dessert after supper. It has been working really well up until yesterday when him and his friend were hitting the bigger boys with baseball bats and today him and his friend were hitting each other with sticks. His friend is a girl, so they aren’t just being “boys”. What else can I try??
make things a little more quick in action, like instead of taking three bad days to lose dessert, if he hits at all that day he loses dessert, most 4 year olds dont recall if they behaved 3 days ago or not, he needs immediate action at that day. also, girls like to play with sticks just as much as boys, dont tell him “its okay to do this with the boys, but not with the girls”, understand that sometimes kids are just being kids, no matter their gender. have a talk with him, tell him that play fighting with anyone, no matter the gender, is alright as long as both people want to do it, you are supervising (as in not in school), and its just playing, so no one actually is getting hurt. if he wants to pretend sword fight with sticks with his friend, fine, but the second that someone actually gets purposefully whacked with the stick, the sticks are taken away and he loses dessert that night. same with hitting, play air punches are fine, but if he actually hits someone, or hes play punching with someone who doesnt want to be played with, he gets a consequence. the most important thing to stress with him is that play fighting is only allowed when you are watching, to make sure it doesnt go to far, and he needs to stop the moment you say stop, your there to be the referee, if he continues, he loses dessert.
