Evans was an excellent player who became a better hitter as he got older. And in the field, he was superb, genuinely great for RF — excellent range, speed, and an outstanding arm in both distance and accuracy (and RF in Fenway is huge, more like playing center).

Wow. That’s as harsh a summary dismissal as there’s ever been. I didn’t understand it — okay, while I’d like to see him cast in bronze, I can understand that the writers would collectively think No. But that Evans’ candidacy was so soundly crushed — I’ve never understood that.

I place near-zero confidence in the Veterans Committee, under its current format, that it will ever elect anyone and redress the mistakes of history — and, really, besides Santo there are not that many glaring oversights in need of redress.

Evans, I think, is one of those few. I hope he at least gets on the VC ballot in his turn. If the answer is again No, fine, but he merits at least a second run at consideration.
