what is the difference?

In baseball cards, what is the difference between a hobby box and a factory set and when did this start because there were no things like that in the 80′s.

A factory set is just that, a complete set containing one of each card in the set( this does not include inserts or other special cards.). A hobby box is actually a box containing a certain number of packs of cards, with each pack having a certain number of cards. They may contain inserts, auto , game used, and other memoribillia cards. they are usually purchased from a hobby shop, as opposed to your local Walmart, Target, etc. with are called retail. Hobby boxes do not guarantee a complete set. In 1990 Upper Deck came out with a Reggie Jackson Baseball Heroes auto card. Don’t know if this started it.
