Impressive wins by the Red Sox, but Red Sox fans should not get too carried away?
It took a Mariano meltdown for the Red Sox to win the first game, and if it weren’t for that blown call on that steal attempt the second game could have ended very differently.
It’s no surprise to me that the Yankees middle relief is bad, so as good as the Red Sox looked, there’s not that much of a difference between the two teams, and I’m pumped for an exciting pennant race.
I find it ridiculous and ignorant that there are people who are starting to say that because of these two games the Yankees are dead in the water and blew their shot at the playoffs.
If there’s one thing I know for sure about baseball is that a team can turn itself around from April to September, and it’s not even like the Yankees have been that bad.
It’s just typical of people to magnify and exaggerate the Yankees’ flaws.
I think it’s much more common for people to exaggerate the Yankee’s strengths.
I don’t think two games and you put a white flag up on the Yankees, but they weren’t good enough last year (3rd in their division, 89 wins) and although they spent money on ‘top’ people last year, they still lost more than they gained.
Sabathia can only match Mussina, his totals aren’t going to blow Mussina’s 20 wins a way. Burnett will be injured and under perform because he only does well in contract years.
Tex came in but Abreu and Giambi left.
SO, while you can say “but we got Sabathia, Burnett and Teixeira,” the Yankees still lost a bit of ground which means 89 wins is probably a good target for them.
Now, 89 wins may win the AL east as we know Toronto won’t keep it up (and I am not a Red Sox fan, I live 10 kms from Toronto) and the Rays have yet to impress.
I’d just prefer for all fans to stop making bold predictions on something they can’t affect and only leads to people attacking those predictions and let the season play out.
