Hello. I am currently a senior in High School that is ready to get out in the real world! The only problem is my family and I aren’t wealthy so I am truly in need of scholarships and any other help I can get. I know about FAFSA but how soon should I send it out? Some people say wait until you get your taxes (which I do not get because currently I don’t have a job) and some say APPLY NOW! So.. which one is it? I have an average GPA, but took and am taking AP’s, volunteer, do community work, tutor, spokes model for some stores, model for JC, work as a translator for my family&others, and some more. I know Russian, Ukranian, Hebrew& and Spanish. Play Soccer, Tennis, Softball, and Track&Field. Also I am Ukranian, I came to the U.S. 4 years ago and learned English on my own, well with a buddy named dictionary haha. ( Sorry forr amy MisTaks dat I maKe :-p ) Anyways, if anyone could give me advice I would really appreciate it thank you!!!

Fill out your FAFSA now. It is the first step in the process. The tax info they need comes from your parents/guardians tax info from the prior year. You must make a determination on which schools you would like to attend and there will be a section that asks for that info so that they can send your eligibility to those institutions. Those schools can determine if you qualify for something they have to offer. However, the FAFSA will also determine what you are eligible for and it is possible that you will qualify for a grant which money you won’t have to pay back but that can’t be decided unless you do a FAFSA. Ask your school’s counselor for info regarding the FAFSA. The FAFSA can be done online very easily although it does take some time. Also, apply to the colleges. Then make arrangements to take the SAT exams and or the ACT depending on what schools you choose. If you decide to go to a junior college then you will take the Compass at most. You don’t have to wait for acceptance before taking the exams. In fact the schools will just put your applications on hold with a “pending review” or something similar until your test scores arrive. When you take the tests they will ask where you want your scores sent and then they will send them to the individual institutions. Everything is a process and takes time; so the sooner you accomplish these tasks the better for you. Also, ask your counselor for any scholarship essays you can enter. There are often deadlines but worth a shot.
