Hi am learning to read sports in English.
On the New York Post, an article about the Subway Series yesterday Mets versus Yankes
To quote:
“After all, Mike Pelfrey against the Dead Bat Society that lost Derek Jeter to a late scratch gave the Mets, who had won eight straight, an advantage over a Yankees club that had dropped three in a row.”
Okay what does “Dead Bat Society” means?
And what does it mean to loose someone to a late scratch?
One more paragraph:
And Hughes’ previous few outings weren’t crisp.
Nevertheless, Hughes regrouped, Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson hit clutch homers, Joba Chamberlain found his high-octane fastball and Mariano Rivera worked a perfect ninth…
What does “few outings” mean?
and “clutch homers”?
“high-octane fastball”?
“perfect nineth”?

dead bat society = they yankees are not hitting the ball
few outings = his last couple of out he pitched -crisp= perfect
clutch homers = they hit home runs when they need them hit
high octane fastball = super fastball like 96 97 98 mph
perfect ninth = no runners reached base when he pitched the ninth inning
