Why do some batsmen average more in ODIs than Tests?
Surely the few that do could just bat as they do in ODI in tests and get the same average? For example Bevan, Dhoni, Klusener, Nick Knight, Graeme Hick, to name a few.
I have thought perhaps pitches for ODIs are either prepared more batsmen friendly, or just the fact it’s essentially a first day pitch so no day 4 & 5 batting. Or fielding sides in one-day games may choose to stop certain batsmen from scoring quickly as opposed to focusing on getting them out. However, for most batsmen this does not cause them to have a higher average in ODIs.
Also, watching twenty20 games, it seems odd how top test bowlers like Dale Steyn, Muralitharan, Warne can be hit around the park so easily when batsmen struggle against them in tests.
The game formats are totally different, like comparing apples and oranges. ODI and 20/20 is all about getting runs on the board, no option of a draw, (ties have a super over play off) tests are more about winning and not losing, a draw is a better option than losing. With a draw option available, plodding is permitted. Test cricket is about testing your mettle to stay and last out the time available, not playing percentage cricket and swinging at anything. Playing high risk cricket will not put enough runs on the board in a test match, (unless you are playing the likes of Zimbabwe one day.)
