What is cotton batting use for?

Is it like cotton stuffing? I want to make some throw pillows, and it would be nice to use some cotton stuffing, instead of polyester. Is cotton batting like stuffing, or what?

It’s the lining for quilts, usually.
You can use it for stuffing sure, but you might want to shred it up a bit, first, to avoid lumps.
