Robinson Cano’s Hitting Trainer!?!
Is Robinson Cano an MVP candidate because of his position?
Robbie had a great year (and I’m sort of cheering for him as I’m a Yankees fan) but Hamilton and Cabrera had more home runs and higher batting averages. Have his stats been overvalued because of his position? Second baseman are sometimes judged offensively with lower standards (e.g. “legendary” 2B Ryne Sandberg, Joe Morgan and Craig Biggio)
No, he’s a candidate because he had a great year. Don’t forget, Cano carried the Yankees in April and May when A-Rod was not hitting for power and Texeira was around .200. The Yankees could not afford to give Cano much time off, which was why he slowed down the last couple of months. Guys who hit .319, with 40 doubles, 29 HR, and over 100 RBI should be MVP candidates, regardless of position.
I have to disagree with the gentleman who said that the short right field is working against Cano. Cano did hit 16 of his 29 HR at home, but it wasn’t as if he needed a lot of help from the 310 sign. Cano can hit home runs anywhere, and many of them were bombs. A lot of them were to right-center, which is a heckuva lot more then 310 feet. Don’t forget the tape-measure shot to left-center in Dodger Stadium which won a game in June. Also, Cano hit .298 at home, .341 on the road.
