1. Batting average = mean
(ignore walks; assume all other outs are 0s)
2. Always.
By definition, mean is average. Median is not.
3. Distribution is “skewed to the left” – having a long tail on left side. It pulls the mean towards the left, lower than median.
4. Sampling: sample size = n. Population is a lot larger = N.
Say student is supposed to know N things (population, a lot), but a test can only test you on n things (sample) and estimate what you know out of N.
