1.How is the law of conservation of energy illustrated in the following situations: A person Hitting a baseball with a bat, A person throwing a flying disk.
Hanna: Let’s take the first: The person swinging the bat loses some of his energy in swinging. If he misses the ball ,the energy put into the swing is carried by the bat, often causing the swinger to be pulled around. He may lose the bat and the bat uses the energy to fly away from the hitter. It contains kinetic (moving energy) gravity will pull it downward. When it strikes the ground, the energy is tranfered to heat and the heat is absorbed by the earth and surrounding air. Heat flow is directional, always from hot to cold. The air and earth now contain the energy in the form of heat. It remains there untill cooler objects absorb it . If the batter strikes the ball, the energy in the bat is transferred to the ball. The ball flies until gravity pulls it to earth where, as above, the earth absorbs it
The exact sme thing happens when a person throws a disc. In short, the energy is in a continously closed loop being transfered from kinetic to potential energy many time along the way and we might say that after the player has swung the bat he may lay down to get warmth from the earth which transfers energy back into his body etc etc. Just consider energy as being part of a closed loop. The sun gives energy to our earth, plants use it to grow. Humans eat the plants and absorb the energy. What we don’t use to grow is stored as fat energy to be used later or buried with the person when he dies from obecity. The body decomposes and the energy is put back into the earth and will be used by plants to grow . One may say: Since the sun is essentially the source of all energy, what happens when the sun burns out? The same thing that happens when a fire burns out.
