How do I learn to play slow-pitch softball?

OK, so don’t laugh at me – but I have not played sports for 35 years, and never really played baseball or softball. Now, at 48, after falling in love with baseball, I have the softball bug … but I stink. I would love to get better, and I always give 100% on the field… but I’m terrible. Can’t judge balls to catch them. I’m going to the batting cages so I’m getting a little better at hitting. I really need to improve my fielding though. I can’t just go play – teams want somebody who can play already. So I’m stuck. Is there such a thing as an adult slow-pitch softball clinic? Any other ideas?

Joe, do you have trouble comprehending English? He said his batting is improving, but needs help with fielding.

Gary, find a friend who plays softball and have him, or her, hit ground balls and fly balls to you. The only way to learn, and improve, is to practice. And, no, I never heard of an adult slow-pitch softball clinic.

Miner’s crossover-step slap hitting technique ignited a new trend in softball. Starting with footwork, Miner shares his coaching points on slap hitting. Starting in the back of the box, making a crossover step with the toe to the plate, and keeping shoulder and bat back are fundamental keys. To be an effective slap hitter, players must make contact with the ball at or behind the plate. Using live and slow motion video, Miner is able to show the proper techniques presented in this DVD. The drag bunt is also a focus of this presentation. Footwork and shoulder turn are similar, but the drag bunt is executed with one hand on the bat.
