High School Softball rules?
Where can I get access to every single softball rule that applies to California high school softball teams? Today, a coach from the opposing team stopped the game in the middle of an inning (my team was at bat – it was our home) because he didn’t like the lighting. I am interested in knowing what the final score should be. Does the score stop at the previous inning? or is the final score the score that was going on when he stopped the game? Also can opposing coaches stop games due to lighting issues in the middle of the bottom of an inning (when their team is on defense)? I need to know and so does my head coach (her first year coaching). The umpires were extremely unhelpful and rude.
Short answer: if you (the home team) scored and took the lead in the uncompleted inning, that’s the final score. If the game was tied, it’s tied. Otherwise, the final score is the score at the end of the last completed inning.
RE: Umpires – if the umpires decide to call the game, the game is over. They’re under no obligation to conduct a rules clinic for you or your coach. That being said, in what way were they rund and unhelpful?
Now for the details:
CIF adheres to NFHS rules. Your coach should have a copy. While the NFHS rule books are not normally available on the web, if you search for “2011 NFHS Softball Rule Book”, you might just find it. You can also order the rule book here – http://www.nfhs.com/p-621-2011-softball-rule-book.aspx.
A coach cannot stop the game, only the umpire can do that, though the coach can bring to the attention of the umpire a situation that he believes to be unsafe – darkness, for example. It is then umpire’s judgment as to whether or not the game should be stopped, per rule 4-1-6.
If the umpire stops the game, then rules 4-2-2 and 4-2-5 (re: ties) comes into play to decide the final score. The summary of 4-2-5 is that if the game is tied when it is called, it is tied. The summary of 4-2-2 is that the score reverts to the score at the end of the last complete inning, unless the home team scores AND takes the lead in the incomplete inning.
Here is the full text of the rules:
“4-2-2 . . . If a game ends because of weather conditions, or darkness interferes with play so that the game is called (ended) by the umpire, it is a regulation game provided:
a. five full innings have been played; or if the home team has scored an equal or greater number of runs in four or four and a fraction turns at bat than the visiting team has scored in five turns.
b. play has gone beyond five full innings and is called when the teams have not had an equal number of completed turns at bat. The score shall be the same as it was at the end of the last completed inning; unless the home team, in its half of the incomplete inning, scores a run (or runs) which equals or exceeds the opponent’s score, in which case, the final score shall be as recorded when the game is called.”
“4-2-5 . . . If a regulation called game has a tie score when ended as in 4-2-2, it is a tie game unless the state association has any prescribed game-ending procedures.”
[Note: the 4-1/2 and 5 turn reference in the rule is for a nine-inning game. For games of six or seven innings, those numbers are 3-1/2 and 4.
Hope this helps.

Managing Little League (Little League Baseball Guide) $7.86 Late on the night of his youngest son’s final Little League game, Ned McIntosh found he couldn’t sleep. He realized that he’d never again coach one of his children, and he began wondering whether his coaching system, developed over 15 years of coaching (and three sons), would be of use to other parent/coaches. Three years later, Managing Little League Baseball was born. From start to finish, McInt… |
